Express Teppanyaki, my go-to spot for Taiwanese-style teppanyaki, has declined recently. The food quality has gone down, and prices have increased significantly.
To make matters worse, they now need to certify their food as halal, which means they can’t use certain ingredients like rice wine or non-halal sauces. That's a big change, and it has definitely affected the taste of the dishes.
Also, they no longer offer pork as a protein option. That’s a huge disappointment for pork lovers.

This was the worst teppanyaki meal I've ever had. My sister and I paid $19 each for the sirloin set, which isn't cheap. The steak was overcooked and very tough—we couldn't finish it because our teeth and jaws hurt from chewing so much. To make matters worse, the rice was undercooked.
Additionally, the cashier was rude and rushed us to place our order, seemingly so she could return to watching shows on her phone.

I have been visiting this outlet over the years. For the last few times, my portion of vegetables, compared to others, was at least 50% smaller.
The chef gave other tables much larger portions, but mine were very small.
I found this to be unfair. When there were leftover bean sprouts, he topped up a table that already had a larger portion instead of mine, which was very small.

I always come to this store for teppan-yaki because it's the only one near my house.
Sadly, their standards have dropped. Prices have increased a lot. Most of the time there's a long queue, yes, but it's very messy sometimes (like they sometimes skip customers even though they have enough staff).
I ordered Set C, and my friend ordered Set B, which was $51 total. (6/10 rating for food)
No longer worth the price.

The pricing has been increasing rapidly, while their portions are decreasing rapidly as well. $15 for a simple meal with bland sauce, tough meat, salty vegetables and bean sprouts. Not to mention, they put a half scoop of rice into a bowl to make it look full. You can see the "full" bowl of rice when split into two bowls. 🤷♂️🤷♂️

After reading countless negative recent reviews, I am quite delighted that I had a decent experience overall.
This was my first visit to this shop, so I don't know how it was previously.
Anyway, while I agree that the price is slightly costly, the experience does matter. The food is cooked in front of you, and the chef makes the portions.
My portion of squid and beef was rather decent, with lots of vegetables too. Personally, it was a bit spicy, and the squid was frozen, so it didn't taste as good. The beef wasn't bad, though.
However, the soup was too cold and tasted horrible. The rice was also subpar (a lazy home cook's rice would be like this).
Overall, we were content with the meal. A one-time experience would be fine.

It has been a while since my last visit, and I noticed that their prices have increased significantly, and the menu has also changed.
I ordered their Set C combo. The overall food quality hasn’t changed much—it’s standard teppanyaki.
It seems like they now have more teppanyaki chefs, and the female chef I wasn’t too fond of is no longer there. (This is based on my subjective impression that she tended to allocate smaller portions compared to the other chefs, possibly to serve more customers in fewer rounds of cooking.) With her absence, I found the experience more satisfying.
However, there are two areas I hope they can improve: first, the texture of their steamed rice is too hard, likely due to insufficient water used when cooking. Second, I wish they would offer sugar-free canned drinks. Overall, I’m quite satisfied with my visit.

There was a queue when we visited on a weekend lunch, but it moved pretty fast. We ordered at the counter, were ushered to our seats, and food was served within minutes.
Taste-wise, it was kind of average; the meat was more flavorful compared to the seafood. They served two kinds of veggies: bean sprouts and Chinese cabbage. All meals came with rice and soup. One downside is that they don't allow sharing; everyone had to order a meal.

It’s been a long time since we ate here. I ordered the beef meal. It's the same as before, except that prices have increased a lot due to inflation. The beef set used to be $11, but now it’s $15. Set C, which I had a few years ago, was $17; now it’s $25. I ordered the beef, and you can choose the spicy or non-spicy version. The spicy version is quite spicy. The soup is very bland and not nice. It’s average in price for a plate of meat in today’s inflationary economy. The taste isn't too bad, but don’t expect Michelin star quality. You pay for what you get: bean sprouts, meat, and cabbage, in that order. The queue is long, so be prepared to wait, especially during peak hours, but it moves pretty fast. If you want a quick meal, go on weekdays. The beef is decent quality. One good thing is that the price includes GST, and there is no service charge on top of the listed price. All in all, it’s not bad for a simple meal in the heartlands of Tampines. I would rate the food 3/5. Service is standard, but the lack of a service charge is good. If you can spare $25, Sets A to C are quite filling and include a variety of more meat options.
